Upper Delaware Fly Fishing Report

WEEKEND OUTLOOK

This weekend looks to be a repeat of last weekend with overcast skies and rainfall in the forecast. Today and tomorrow look to be excellent fishing days with light rainfall and reasonable winds. Sunday is forecast to be extra special with heavy winds, rain and snow squalls. Almost the exact weather from last weekend.

Overall this type of cold and dreary weather is beneficial to the river system and the trout. For humans we should be thankful for gortex jackets and performance clothing.

If you are fishing this weekend there should be good insect activity. Insects always emerge in better numbers on lousy days. We should also see some Blue WIng Olive activity associated with the rain and possibly a longer emergence window from the Sulfurs that are active on the Main Stem and Lower East Branch.

Conditions throughout the system remain similar to the last week. The rivers are at good flows for wade anglers and drift boat anglers. There is great wading access on all of our area rivers at this time.

The Upper East and West Branch are still fishing well with Blue Quills, Hendricksons and Caddisflies. The Upper East is starting to get March Browns especially in the lower reaches of the tailwater influenced section. This weekends forecast is also sure to spur a nice hatch of Olives. During last weeks crappy weather the olives were tiny but they were profuse.

The Freestone waters are fishing good with a bit more insect diversity. On the Beaverkill, WIllowemoc, Main Delaware and Lower East Branch there are lots of insect choices. There are some stragler Hendricksons on the Beamoc Waters. The main activity however is from March Browns and an Assortment of Caddisflies. In the Main Stem and Lower East Branch Sulfurs are an established hatch and they are emerging well daily. There is the possibility of spinner activity on all water at about any time of day. Anglers can expect to see a wide range of different activity based on the sections of river they choose to fish.

Our guides have been busy this week. We have been putting 6 or 7 groups out daily and covering a lot of water. Our staff has been floating large portions of the Delaware Branches and Main Stem daily. Anglers who plan on fishing the Beamoc water this week will find lots of willing Trout. The waters are warming and teh Fish are very active. With the overcast skies and light rainfall small streamers and buggers will most likely be effective. Look for the best dry fly activity later in the afternoons. The best action is still in the slower pools for surface activity.
