Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Report
The really good fishing continues. Water temperatures are still warm for the date. Yesterday we were still reading water temperatures in the low 70's which means you can expect to encounter a wide variety of fish species.
Currently anglers can target the Main inshore species of Snook, Reds and Trout but there are plenty of Pelagic species roaming about as well. Jacks are about everywhere and willing to hit about any fly you throw at them. Bluefish, Mackerel and Bonito are also targets of opportunity.
Yesterday afternoon I did a trip where we were specifically chasing the Pelagics with Top Water flies. We used a variety of Poppers and Dahlberg style flies and had great action. We were targeting the drop offs along oyster bars and some deeper water above bottom structure.
For the second day in a row the action was non stop. Yesterday it was both Jack Crevales and Blue Fish that were on the feed. We were getting so many strikes that we shredded a few popper flies. This action should continue for as long as the water stays warm.
We do have a cold front expected today which could drop temperatures a bit. Today's high is only expected to be in the low 60's. The front however is expected to pass through in 24 hours or so. After that it should be back to warm weather with daytime highs in the low 80's.
Below is a shot of one of yesterday's Blue Fish and the flies we were using.
