Opening Day - 2017 Upper Delaware Fishing Report
Tomorrow morning New York’s Trout Season will open! As is tradition, the place to be for the opener is in Roscoe, aka “Trout Town USA”
As is always the Case here in Roscoe the Local Chamber of Commerce along with local businesses’ have plenty of activities planned for Opening Day. Activities are planned in both Roscoe and Livingston Manor.
Anglers making the pilgrimage to Roscoe for opening day will find all of our local waters to be cold and high.
The recent rainfall combined with snow melt have the entire Upper Delaware River System running bank full of water. The snow melt is adding turbidity in places so water clarity will vary a bit from section to section.
Right now streamer fishing is your best bet. Our staff took to the water yesterday to float a section of the Delaware. Guides Zach and Matt worked some of our custom streamer patterns deep and slow for a couple of hookups.
The photos show the results of their patience.
If you are heading out this weekend streamer flies and big nymphs are your best options. Our guide staff always has their focus on streamers in the initial weeks of the season. Not until the waters warm up and the heavy flows subside do we start to prospect with other techniques.
Right now larger sized baitfish imitations will perform best. These should be fished with weight and the tactic is to slowly creep your pattern around near the bottom and in the dead spots. The Trout are cold and their metabolism is not at a level where they will chase anything very far.
Our Fly Shop is fully stocked with Custom Streamer patterns that are perfect for enticing big Upper Delaware Browns! Make sure you stop in before heading to the river.
If you want to beat the high water now might be a good time for a drift boat trip. Our guides are ready to go and they know how to hunt big browns!
We always encounter some really big ones in the initial days of the season when conditions are right and this year conditions are right.
Anglers planning to visit Roscoe this season should also remember that our guides are more than willing to help you plan your fishing day. They are available every morning before they go out for their trips. We encourage everyone to take advantage of their intimate knowledge of this beautiful river system.
Good Luck in 2017 and we hope to see you on the water!
