Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers
APPLE CADDIS EXPLOSION
Yesterday was "The Day". Dry fly fishing is oficially on and most of the Trout in the system finally figured it our.
Most areas of the river saw water temperatures in the mid 50's yesterday and the insect activity was amazing. Yesterday my boat only fished the Dry Fly and we had pods of fish feeding in every pool. The fish were gorging and pretty vulnerable to being caught.
We fished a mix of Hendrickson Knock Down Duns and CDC Apple Caddis and had lots of confident takes. We ran the numbers up a bit with mostly Rainbows that were 16" to 18".
The fish are still mostly in the Tailouts of the pools but these pods of Bows were moving around quickly. If the insects remain steady it wont take long for them to spread out.
Yesterday was the first day of the year that I observed and handled a lot of trout. It looks like the last 2 fairly mild winters has helped to keep the fish in good shape. Al of our Rainbows were beautiful and very fat. They fought hard and were jumping all over. With the blanket type hatch yesterday I was also able to observe numbers. There were some pools yesterday where there were heads coming up from top to bottom. There are a lot of fish in some places.
Dont forget to stop by if you are heading out. We are fully stocked with custom patterns specifically for the hatches that are on!
We have some trips available next week. Give us a call today to get on the calendar. 607-290-4022
