Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Delaware and Catskill Rivers
The photos above and below are Apex Predator Rich Julian holding 22.5" of East branch Power. This was our best fish on yesterday's float. Taken on one of our Hackle Wing Spinners!
THE REPORT
The fly fishing is very good across the system but in some areas it is incredible. The Tailwaters, East and West branches have lots of action with dry flies. Hendricksons and Hendrickson spinners are on the water in a big way. Our guests are killing it every day. We have been handling both big numbers of fish and some truly large Brown Trout.
Below is Hugh Cornwall with another nice spinner eating Brown from Yesterday
The freestones, Beaverkill, WIllowemoc, Lower East and Main Stem are offering a wide array of fishing conditions. The Beamoc waters are just dropping into a range where anglers can finally move around in the water. Conditions are still a little high but by the weekend it should be near perfect. The Lower East is in great shape for Drift Boats or Walk Wading. Most of this section is fishing well. The Main Stem is still too high for any serious wading but the fishing is improving daily for the anglers floating there.
The Freestones are just coming out of being between hatches. The March Browns and Sulfur activity is slowly developing. There is also caddis activity daily. The best action here will come by fishing a combination of Dry Fly and Nymph throughout the day. Between hatches the Trout are always quick to jump on the nymphs. Our guides are doing well with our Bead Head soft hackles, Ice Caddis, Flash Back Pheasant Tails and Copper John soft hackles.
We are still throwing streamers a bit but the waters are dropping and they are crystal clear. On yesterdays float we had some follows including a couple of really big boys but they were just window shopping
Anglers planning to fish this weekend should expect to find the best fishing of the year thus far. You should also expect to see the most angler traffic of the year over the next 3 weekends.
If you want to get in on the hot action give us a call. We have some openings available in the prime dry fly time period. 607-290-4022
