Warm Weather and Bugs

This weekend is set to be our first real shot at decent weather and decent fishing. There are also lots of events planned for the weekend as the Roscoe Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annual Two Headed Trout Dinner. I will be giving a presentation at the dinner on our favorite topic, fly fishing the Upper Delaware. There are some tickets still available for the dinner if you would like to join us. NOW THE FISHING

Our guides have been on the water most every afternoon. and things are progressing. There have been good hatches of Olives, Blue Quills and the occasional Quill Gordon. At this time the river flows have dropped enough that the fish are coming up at times.

Yesterday there was sporadic rising in the East and West branches yesterday afternoon and a few places where fish rose fairly steady.

This is good news and hopefully the improvement will continue at the current trajectory. Anglers planning to fish should remember that the day has a lot to do with the level of activity. Right now the key is temperature change. It take a few degree rise in water temperature to get the trout going.

My top pick right now for finding risers are the Upper East and West Branches. On these rivers look for the action in the slowest water and the areas that are protected from the heavy flow.

In the rest of the system the best action will still come with streamers and nymphs fished slow and deep. This week streamers in the 3" range have been taking fish. The waters are now very clear so small will sell the illusion better. Our smaller two tone articulated baitfish have been fairly hot as are buggers and Conehead Buggers and Zonkers.

If you plan on nymphing my suggestions are to stick with comfort foods that are available year round. Cased Caddis, Ice Caddis Pupa, BH Pheasant Tails,, Hares Ears and Rubber Leg Stoneflies will all take some fish. Like every early season don't expect the fish to hunt your rig down. You need to get right near the bottom and present the fly several times into lokely holding areas.
