Big Bugs and Light Fishing Pressure
Currently the fishing in the Upper Delaware remains good.. All of our rivers are at low conditions and are offering unlimited wading. Some of the lower stretches of our freestone rivers are warming up late in the day so you may want to choose an upstream location for evening hatches.
After bug week there was an exodus of people from our local waters. On most all of my trips this week my guests and I have had the water to ourselves. Yesterday was no different as we floated a long section of river and only saw 4 or 5 wade anglers all day."
With the late spring this year the big bugs are still around. The last few nights have had huge spinner flights of Green Drake, Brown Drake and March Brow spinners. Last night the water was totally covered with these giant bugs and the biggest trout in the river were gorging. We had 4 20"+ fish to net during this action along with some smaller fish.
In addition to the drake activity Sulfurs, Isonychias, Big Olives, Caddisflies and more are still emerging well.
Our guides will be starting to offer evening hatch trips starting this Monday. These half day evening trips put you on the water at the right time to fish the dry. Nigh time mouse and streamer trips are also a go from Monday through the summer months. We will also start offering trips to target the Delaware Smallmouth Bass. In addition to the hot dry fly action the nymphing is red hot. With the low water the fish are easy to target in the riffles and pockets. Now is a great time to fish a triple nymph rig and keep your rod bent.
